The spiritual weapons of truth and righteousness

by Carlin Lawrence

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14). Every Christian should understand that Satan is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). Satan uses the worldly systems to spread lies about God and Jesus Christ. Satan uses worldly systems to lie to people; telling them that one religion is just as good as the other, and that they don’t need Jesus Christ as their Savior. Satan will even use preachers, Bible teachers, and evangelists to teach that God promises every Christian that they should always be healthy and wealthy, but that’s a lie (2 Peter 2:1-3). Every Christian should make it a habit to live an honest and truthful life. God’s spiritual forces are constantly protecting Christians that are totally committed to serving God in every aspect of their life. “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14).

The “breastplate of righteousness” is a piece of God’s armor that’s necessary for Christians to overcome the temptations of this sinful world, their sinful flesh, and Satan. This piece of God’s armor is necessary for holy living! God expects Christians to put on the breastplate of righteousness by living out God’s righteousness in their everyday life. Jesus said, “If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teachings” (John 14:23). “Just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:15). Living a holy life protects a Christian from many of Satan’s temptations. Living a holy life keeps the door of a Christian’s mind closed to sinful thoughts. Living a life pleasing to God gives Christians great joy. Christians have been set free from the control of their sinful flesh, Satan, and the world, so they can live righteous lives for God (Romans 6:18). Christians that live a godly life are an example to their children, and everyone they associate with. Christians that put on God’s spiritual armor, and arm themselves with God’s spiritual weapons, will be able to handle anything Satan can throw at them.
Becoming a child of God makes a person an enemy of Satan and his demonic horde! The closer a person lives according to the truth of God’s Word, the more Satan will attack them. That is why a Christian should make every effort to learn how to use the spiritual weapons that God has given them. Paul wrote, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). The phrase, “renewing of your mind” means for every Christian to replace the wisdom of this world with God’s eternal wisdom. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
